The curriculum of Village Christian Academy is centered around biblical integration and is sequenced from one grade to the next. While many different textbooks are used to accomplish our mission, they are simply tools used by our teachers to assist in the instruction process. The Teachers at Village Christian Academy use texts from ABeka, Prentice Hall, ACSI, and various other publishers both Christian and secular. Textbooks are used after carefully evaluating them to make sure they are not in conflict with God’s Word. The NIV version of the Bible is used in the classroom and for most memory work. Additionally, novels will be introduced beginning in the third grade.
Effective reading is necessary for efficient learning in both spiritual and academic areas. VCA is very interested in building a strong reading culture and encouraging a lifelong love of reading and learning in each student. To aid in achieving these goals, VCA has incorporated the Accelerated Reader program in grades 1-6. This program personalizes reading to the student’s ability level and makes reading practice more effective. Students take an initial assessment in order to determine their individual reading level and then read books matched to their level. Appropriate level books can be found by visiting www.arbookfind.com. After each book is completed, students take a quiz to constantly measure and monitor reading performance and vocabulary growth. The quizzes offer motivation for students to read effectively while also providing parents, teachers, and students with quantitative and qualitative assessment information including progress toward reading goals, number of books read, and quizzes passed.
To help students get organized, each will be given a VCA planner in 3rd through 12th grades. All students will be assigned lockers and locks in the middle school and high school. Students will be assessed a $10 fee for all locks that are not returned at the end of the school year. The office will furnish a student supply list for Kindergarten through 8th grade at the end of the school year. It is the family’s responsibility to purchase the items on the list by the first day of school. High School students will receive a supply list from teachers on the first day of school.
Participation in our summer reading program is required for every student entering TK-1 and above. Our reading list along with its summer writing assignments is available in the school office, on our website, and at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore.
