Psalm 33:3 – Sing to Him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.

I hope your summer was a good one and that you are looking forward to an exciting new school year as much as I am. The above Bible verse is my class verse in the Band classroom. It describes that music is an important part of worshiping the Lord, yet that we should always bring him our best. In band, students will learn to play instruments skillfully. Not all students will be great professional musicians, but I do believe that they can learn the skills to play instruments to the best of their ability and Praise the Lord in doing so. Below you will find information about the various grades and levels of band we offer here at Village Christian Academy.

4th Grade: Band begins in the 4th grade with students selecting one of 4 beginning instruments: Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, or Trombone. No prior music lessons are necessary as students will learn how to read music, count rhythms and assemble and play the instrument. Students will be able to audition to switch instruments at the end of the school year provided they have demonstrated the proper skills. They will perform in mandatory concerts and the end of both semesters.

5th/6th Grade: Students will continue to build on skills they have learned in previous years and begin expanding both their abilities and musical repertoire. They will perform in mandatory concerts and the end of both semesters.

7th-12th Grade: Students will be given numerous performance opportunities as a soloist, small ensemble and combined ensemble. The mandatory performances will be football games, basketball games, pep rallies, and end of the semester concerts. They may participate in a praise band here at Village Baptist Church and auditioning for All-District Band.

High school students may choose to receive Honors Credit for being in band. They must already be enrolled in at least 2 Honors or higher level courses, must have been in band the prior year, and complete additional work that will be discussed in class.

We ask that once the school year is well underway, that both the student AND the parent commit to the band class and the ensemble performance. Musical groups such as band and choir are one of the few groups where everybody is able to participate at the same time. We have no bench warmers.

Lessons are offered here at school for anyone wishing to take them as well as for students who wish to join band for the first time AFTER 4th grade. Those students must also take lessons to assist in catching up with the other students. Please contact Mr. Pittman directly for questions.
