Oops! We Forgot!
I watch children do extraordinary things daily.
I watched children bravely walk through a tuberculosis scare; be tested by a health official and wait the appropriate two days for results. They never complained or pointed a finger, but laughed and supported one another.
I watched our Senior Class serve others. One group went to Costa Rica, built two houses, filled those houses with furniture and appliances, and gave them to two needy families. The cost supplied by the coins saved by elementary students.
A second group of seniors served locally, ministering to a variety of organizations such as Head Start, Fayetteville Urban Ministry, the Salvation Army, and Second Harvest Food Bank.
I witnessed the achievements of Bailey Ku, a National Merit Scholarship Finalist; Christiana Adeyemi appointed to the Governor’s School; Miguel Aqino, NC gymnast of the year; our Mock Trial team finishing third in state and more.
Despite these accomplishments, the public focus was on our football program and the parting of ways between a coach and a school.
Oops we forgot.
We forgot that the football team worked hard, sacrificed greatly, loved each other, their coach, and their school. They did nothing wrong.
Wait a minute -I am the we. I failed them. My focus was on the circumstances, not on the children I love and serve. May we as a community realign our focus to see our children for what they are, God’s greatest gift!
